The Union Pacific FEF series was a group of forty-five 4-8-4 Northern type steam locomotives that the American Locomotive Company built for the Union Pacific Railroad between 1937 and 1944 in three classes, FEF-1 with 20 units, FEF-2 with 15 and FEF-3 with 10. The name spells out the wheel arrangement, four eight four. ALCO designed them after the railroad found its 4-8-2 passenger engines short of steaming power, aiming at 4,000 to 5,000 drawbar horsepower and reliable running at 100 miles per hour. They pulled the Overland Limited, Los Angeles Limited and Portland Rose, were converted from coal to oil in 1946, and four survive, including the operating number 844.
