GE ES44DCi

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The ES44DCi is the international version of the 4,400 horsepower direct current Evolution Series locomotive, built for the Rio Tinto railway in Australia. It is essentially an ES44DC in the body of a GE AC6000CW, with a large radiator at the end that protrudes over the rear deck to cool the engine in the extreme temperatures of the Australian outback. Rio Tinto ordered 100 ES44DCi locomotives, numbered 8100 to 8199, and has all of them. The units can be driven remotely, so nobody has to be in the cab while they are controlled from a control center.
