The Dash 8-44CW, written C44-8W, was built in 1993 and 1994 as the preproduction version of the Dash 9 Series, putting Dash 9 internals inside an extended Dash 8 carbody, except for the first three locomotives. A total of 53 were built, all of them owned by CSX and numbered 9000 to 9052. They were rated at 4,400 horsepower but were all derated to 4,000 horsepower and redesignated CW40-9. They carried an upgraded split-cooling system, a dynamic brake grid, new electronics and control systems and updated traction motors. The majority of the fleet was retired and stored between 2017 and 2023, and only a handful remain in service.
