The Dash 8-40CM, or C40-8M, is the Canadian version of the Dash 8-40C, built between 1990 and 1994 with a production total of 84 units. It is mechanically identical to the Dash 8-40C and the Dash 8-40CW but is distinguished by a full-width cowl body and a Canada-specific nose and windshield configuration. BC Rail ordered 26, Canadian National ordered 55 and the Quebec North Shore and Labrador Railway acquired the remaining three. Its 16-cylinder GE 7FDL diesel engine is rated at 4,000 horsepower, and it is a six-axle member of the Dash 8 Series.
