GE B23-7

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The GE B23-7 is a diesel locomotive that GE first offered in late 1977. It has a smaller 12-cylinder version of the FDL engine and is the successor to the U23B, but at 62 feet 2 inches it is exactly two feet longer. It competed with the very successful EMD GP38-2. GE also produced a variant, the BQ23-7, numbered 5130 to 5139, for the Seaboard Coast Line. A total of 536 B23-7s were built for nine United States customers and two Mexican customers. Ohio Central number 4092, a B23-S7 Super Seven rebuilt from a former Western Pacific U23B, is preserved at the Age of Steam Roundhouse in Sugarcreek, Ohio.
