EMD SD39

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The EMD SD39 is a six-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division between August 1968 and May 1970, with 54 built for American railroads. It was added in 1968 to the 1966 line of six-axle models powered by the new 645 diesel, taking 2,300 horsepower from a turbocharged V12, the smallest prime mover of the group, which left it the most unused space above the frame. The Milwaukee Road ordered a shorter, lighter variant, the SDL39. No official SD39-2 was built, although some SD39 units were rebuilt to Dash 2 specifications.
