EMD SD18

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The EMD SD18 is a six-axle diesel locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division between April 1960 and March 1963. An EMD 567D1 16-cylinder engine generated 1,800 horsepower, and 54 were built for American railroads. It was the third model in EMD's SD, or special duty, line, designed as a modified GP18 with six axles instead of four, which gave more tractive effort and a more even distribution of weight. Chop-nosed Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range 193 is an operating member of the Lake Superior Railroad Museum collection.
