The EMD GP40X is a four-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division between December 1977 and June 1978. A turbocharged 16-cylinder 16-645F3B engine could produce 3,500 horsepower. Twenty-four were built for North American railroads as a pre-production version meant to test technologies later used in the 50-series GP50 and SD50. Ten had an experimental HT-B truck design, and Southern Pacific's units carried experimental modifications nicknamed elephant ears. The designation was also given to a 1965 experimental locomotive, the EMD 433A, which preceded the GP40.
