The EMD GP40 is a four-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division between November 1965 and December 1971. A 16-cylinder EMD 645E3 engine gave it 3,000 horsepower. It rides on a 55-foot frame, three feet longer than the GP35 it followed, and is recognised by three 48-inch radiator fans at the rear of the long hood. Of the 1,187 built for United States railroads, 60 were high-short-hood units with dual control stands for the Norfolk and Western, and passenger versions called the GP40P and GP40TC were also built. The GP40-2 replaced it on 1 January 1972, and rebuilds include the GP40N, GP40R and GP22ECO.
