The EMD BL2 was a diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division between 1947 and 1949, with 58 units produced alongside a single BL1 prototype. Its name stood for Branch Line, and it paired an F-unit style bridge-truss carbody with a body cut away behind the cab so crews could see to the rear while switching. The BL2 had a heavier frame and draft gear than the BL1 and could be fitted with a train-heating steam generator for passenger work. It proved unreliable and expensive to build and maintain, and EMD carried the lessons learned into the GP7. Several examples are preserved.
