ALCO RSD-12

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The ALCO RSD-12 was a C-C diesel-electric locomotive rated at 1,800 horsepower, powered by a 12-cylinder ALCO 251 engine. A total of 171 were produced, by ALCO and by Montreal Locomotive Works. They were used in much the same manner as the four-axle RS-11, although the six-motor design allowed better tractive effort at lower speeds, and the RSD-15 was the larger 16-cylinder model catalogued beside it. Surviving units include Nickel Plate Road 329 at the Mad River and NKP Railroad Museum in Bellevue, Ohio, Southern Pacific 2962 at the Arkansas Railroad Museum, and two Southern Pacific units rebuilt from RSD-5s, 2954 and 2958, at the Southern California Railway Museum in Perris.
