ALCO RS-27

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The ALCO RS-27, which ALCO listed as specification DL-640, was a diesel-electric locomotive built by the company between December 1959 and October 1962. Only 27 examples were manufactured, which makes it one of the smaller production runs among ALCO road switchers of that period. When ALCO introduced its Century Series line in 1963, the C-424, specification DL-640A, replaced the RS-27 in the builder catalog. Today the Minnesota Commercial Railway has the only two RS-27s left in existence, although both have been placed into storage. Published references for the model include Patrick Dorin on Chicago and North Western power, the Model Railroader Cyclopedia volume on diesel locomotives and the Diesel Spotter Guide.
