ALCO DL-202

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The ALCO DL-202 was a one-off experimental diesel-electric freight locomotive set that the American Locomotive Company built at Schenectady, New York, in 1945. It consisted of two cab-equipped DL-202-2 A units and one cabless DL-203-2 B booster, numbered 1500A, B and C, and it was known informally as the Black Maria. Each unit carried a V12 ALCO 241 diesel engine, and the arrangement served as the direct testbed for the FA units that followed in 1946. The set was tried on several northeastern railroads, but no railroad ordered it and it was scrapped in September 1947.
