ALCO Century 424

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The ALCO Century 424, or C424, was a four-axle diesel-electric locomotive of 2,400 horsepower built from April 1963 to May 1967 as part of the American Locomotive Company's Century line. Alco positioned it as the replacement for the earlier RS-27 and as a lower-priced alternative to the C425, and its Canadian licensee Montreal Locomotive Works built some of them as well. Preserved examples come from the Toledo, Peoria and Western, Canadian Pacific, Reading and the Belt Railway of Chicago, among them Canadian Pacific units 4237, 4230 and 4213 and the two Toledo, Peoria and Western locomotives that became Morristown and Erie 18 and 19.
