SNCF X 5800

The X 5800 were a series of fifty-five SNCF railcars in service from 1953 to 1977. Of the U150 type, the unified 150 hp railcars, and delivered after the X 5500, they formed the lower tier of the unified railcars that the SNCF ordered after the war in three power ratings, U150, U300 and U600, with the U825 added a little later, and they were used on local services on secondary lines. The closure of most of those lines and their replacement by the more powerful and spacious X 3800 ended them on the SNCF in 1977, and about half a dozen are preserved. The SNCF ordered them from Renault in three contracts between December 1950 and August 1952, and they were delivered from the Choisy-le-Roi works in 1953 and 1954. They share the body, drive train and performance of the X 5500, but differ outside by sliding access doors, and the gearbox ratios allow 98 km/h with an in-service limit of 90 km/h.
