The SNCF X 3600 were a series of 35 railcars that were an evolved version of the Renault ABJ type, called the ABJ 4. They were ordered in January 1948 at the same time as the De Dietrich X 3700 and delivered between October 1948 and October 1949, and spent almost their whole career on the south-west region of the SNCF; the last were withdrawn on 23 May 1977 and struck off in December of that year. Two are preserved by associations, including the lead car X 3601, which is listed as a historic monument. The order followed the SNCF decision of 7 June 1944 to buy railcars from Renault and De Dietrich, the two main French railcar builders, to rebuild a fleet damaged by the war. The railcars were built by the Regie Nationale des Usines Renault at Billancourt, with the Renault 517 J engine of 300 hp, electro-pneumatic controls and a permitted top speed of 120 km/h.
