The Renault ADX were railcars ordered by the Paris-Orleans-Midi and the PLM but delivered to the SNCF. The prototype ADX 1 was designed by Renault to explore high power in a railcar: it has two V12 diesel engines of 265 horsepower each, driving it at up to 140 km/h, which gives better reliability if one engine fails and better adhesion from four driven axles, at the cost of about thirty seats compared with the Renault ADP. It came out in spring 1936 and worked from Nancy depot until it derailed at Barbentane on 26 October 1949, a disaster with 12 dead and about fifty injured, and was struck off the next year. After the good results of the prototype, the PO-Midi and the PLM ordered 13 and 8 examples of the ADX 2, ordered in 1937 and delivered from May 1939, the last leaving the works on 29 April 1940.
