NS Intercity Nieuwe Generatie

Passenger Rolling Stock and High-Speed Trainsets

The Intercity Nieuwe Generatie, or ICNG, nicknamed Wesp, is an electric multiple unit trainset of the Dutch Railways, built by Alstom Konstal in Poland on its Coradia Stream platform. It supplements the existing intercity rolling stock and replaces the Bombardier TRAXX locomotives and Intercityrijtuig coaches on the high-speed line between Amsterdam and Belgium, providing the connection originally planned for the Fyra service, which was cancelled in 2013. NS began procurement in July 2014, the respondents were Alstom, Siemens, Bombardier and Stadler, and in May 2016 Alstom won a contract that was finalized for 79 trainsets, 49 five-car units and 30 eight-car units. The order was later expanded with trains capable of running on both Belgian and Dutch track. The first train arrived in the Netherlands on 23 May 2020, permission to operate was granted at the end of 2022 and the trains entered passenger service in April 2023, running initially on the high-speed line between Schiphol and Breda at 200 km/h, against 160 km/h for the existing equipment.
