The NS 93, short for Neumático Santiago 1993, is the third generation of rubber-tyred rolling stock used on the Santiago Metro system, manufactured by GEC Alsthom in 1996 and put into operation in 1997. It was originally designed for Line 5, first operated on Line 2 before Line 5 opened, and today works on lines 1 and 5. The NS 93 series is based on the design of the MP 89 series from the Paris Metro, with sloped ends, automatic doors and through gangways from car to car, but is slightly taller to accommodate air conditioning. The trains operate in six, seven or eight car formations of 90, 105 and 120 metres, each car 14.88 metres long. Each trainset has a train speed surveillance system, SACEM, which the MP 89 lacks, four three-phase asynchronous AC motors, one per bogie, and an engine power of 2,400 kilowatts. Automated station announcements were added in 2010 and since 2016 some trains are equipped with CBTC for better frequency on Line 1. A train entering the Lo Ovalle depot derailed on 7 February 2012 while in testing mode.
