CP Class 2240

Passenger Rolling Stock and High-Speed Trainsets

The CP 2240-class is an electric multiple unit used by the national train operator Comboios de Portugal. Each unit has 3 cars, with the ends being driving trailers and the middle being a power car that houses the traction motors. The units were assembled between 2003 and 2005 by Alstom, reusing the old Sorefame body shells of the 2100, 2150 and 2200-class units to keep costs down and avoid fully scrapping old rolling stock. The bogies were custom-built with new Alstom traction motors for the 1668 mm Iberian gauge, and the units can operate in multiple with up to 3 units, for a total of 9 passenger cars. The body is by Sorefame, the electrical equipment, interior and propulsion by Alstom, the main transformer by Pauwels, the pantograph by Schunk and the pneumatic brakes by Knorr-Bremse. The top speed is 120 km/h, the tare weight 135.7 tonnes, and the passenger space is 264 seated and 163 standing, with five automatic plug doors per side. Safety features include CONVEL, a dead-man's handle, ground radio and a black-box speed recorder.
