China Railway DDJ1

Passenger Rolling Stock and High-Speed Trainsets

The China Railway DDJ1 is a first generation high-speed electric multiple unit built in 1999 for China Railway as an experimental vehicle, of which only one set was made. The Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive works and its design institute were responsible for the power car, Changchun Railway Vehicles for the overall design and for three of the cars, Nanjing Puzhen for the double-deck second-class car, and Qingdao Sifang and Tangshan each for a single-deck second-class car. The seven-car push-pull set has one power car with four 1,000 kW ZD118 traction motors and carries 438 passengers. It was named DDJ1 in March 1999, tested on the Beijing ring railway and entered passenger service between Shenzhen and Guangzhou East on 27 September 1999, limited to 180 km/h against a design speed of 200 km/h. Its DC motors proved unreliable, it was removed from service around mid-2002 and has been stored at the Beijing ring railway since April 2003.
