The British Rail Class 357 Electrostar is an alternating current electric multiple unit passenger train built by Adtranz, and later Bombardier, at Derby Litchurch Lane Works between 1999 and 2002 for about 292 million pounds in two batches. It is the first member of the Electrostar family and shares its basic design, bodyshell and core structure with the Turbostar diesel multiple unit, both descended from the Class 168 Clubman. The modular aluminium alloy body uses a 20-metre car, and the units have air conditioning, air suspension, CCTV, sliding plug doors, rheostatic and air disc brakes and IGBT AC motor drives. They were built for 100 mph running, though the London, Tilbury and Southend line is limited to 75 mph, and the whole fleet is operated by c2c on that line.
