The British Rail Class 222 Meridian is a diesel-electric multiple unit high-speed passenger train capable of 125 mph (200 km/h). Twenty-seven sets were built by Bombardier Transportation in Bruges, Belgium, between 2003 and 2005 as part of the Voyager family, alongside the Class 220 Voyager and Class 221 Super Voyager. Built originally for Midland Mainline and Hull Trains, they are now run by Lumo and East Midlands Railway, which brand them Meridian. A Cummins QSK19 diesel engine of 559 kW under each car drives a generator that feeds Alstom Onix 800 motors on two axles per car, on B5000 lightweight bogies, and a set can travel about 1,350 miles between refuellings. They have rheostatic brakes beside the air brakes and Dellner couplers that let Class 57 locomotives tow them in an emergency, although they cannot run in multiple with Voyagers. Midland Mainline introduced the first on 31 May 2004, replacing Class 170 Turbostars and some High Speed Trains.
