British Rail Class 180

Passenger Rolling Stock and High-Speed Trainsets

The British Rail Class 180 Adelante is a class of 14 diesel-hydraulic multiple unit passenger trains manufactured by Alstom at its Washwood Heath factory in 2000 and 2001 for First Great Western, part of the Coradia 1000 family along with the Class 175. All are owned by Angel Trains. Operations commenced with First Great Western in December 2001 on express commuter services that used the type's 125 mph or 200 km/h capability, but the type suffered frequent service disruption from technical problems, particularly in its hydraulic transmission system, and the operator returned all of them in favour of refurbished InterCity 125 sets, the last leaving its service in 2009. Hull Trains replaced its Class 222 fleet with several in 2008 and operated the type until 2020, Grand Central leased several from 2009 and ran them exclusively until November 2023, and four formerly used by Hull Trains went to East Midlands Railway, entering service in January 2020 and withdrawn in May 2023. The fourteen five-carriage units were ordered in October 1997 and the first was unveiled on 18 April 2000.
