The British Rail Class 170 Turbostar is a British diesel-hydraulic multiple unit passenger train designed and built by Adtranz, and later by Bombardier Transportation, at Derby Litchurch Lane Works. It was derived from the Class 165 and 166 Networker Turbos of the 1990s, keeping their aluminium alloy frame and Voith transmission, with ZF final drive and MTU diesel engines, and its first units entered service in May 1999 on regional, long-distance and some suburban services. A total of 139 units were built, though some were later converted to Class 168 and Class 171 units. The sets are two- or three-car trains with 2+1 first class and 2+2 standard seating, and are currently in use with CrossCountry, East Midlands Railway, Northern Trains and ScotRail.
