The Bombardier Turbostar, sold as the ADtranz Turbostar until 2001, is a group of diesel multiple unit passenger trains built by ADtranz and then Bombardier Transportation at Derby Litchurch Lane Works in England between 1997 and 2011. It was the first new train type introduced after the privatisation of British Rail. Chiltern Railways ordered the first units in 1996 as Class 168, known as Clubman, and the group later gained Classes 170, 171 and 172. Turbostar and Electrostar share a modular design with an aluminium alloy underframe and bodyshell and glass-reinforced plastic and steel cab ends. Classes 168, 170 and 171 use an MTU engine and a Voith hydrodynamic transmission derived from British Rail Engineering's Networker Turbo trains, with one powered bogie per car, while Class 172 has a cleaner MTU engine, a ZF mechanical gearbox and lighter FLEXX-ECO bogies. Class 170 units can work in multiple with older Sprinter units.
