Bombardier Flexity Swift U5

The U5 is the fifth generation of Stadtbahn vehicles on the Frankfurt am Main U-Bahn, built by Bombardier Transportation on its Flexity Swift platform. The six-axle, high-floor articulated cars are about 25 metres long and come in three forms: the two-cab U5-ZR, the single-cab U5-ER, which always runs in coupled pairs of about 50 metres, and the cabless U5-MW middle car that lets pairs grow to 75 or 100 metre trains with a continuous walk-through interior. Frankfurt's transit operator VGF ordered 146 vehicles for 300 million euros in 2006, the first Frankfurt U-Bahn type not built by Duewag, and the fleet grew to 224 cars delivered by June 2017, with 22 more middle cars ordered in 2018. The cars are assembled in Bautzen, with bogies from Siegen and electrical equipment from Mannheim, reach 80 km/h, and entered passenger service in September 2008 on the A line, later working the C and B lines. They replaced the older U2, Ptb and U3 cars.
