Barcelona Metro 9000 Series

Passenger Rolling Stock and High-Speed Trainsets

The 9000 Series is a series of heavy rail rolling stock that operates on lines 2, 4, 9 and 10 of the Barcelona Metro. Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona awarded the contract for its construction to Alstom in 2002, and the trains, constructed in Belgium, France and Spain, are part of the Alstom Metropolis family of underground trains. The contract originally specified 50 driverless trains for line 9 only, but in July 2005 TMB changed it to 34 semi-automatic trains for lines 2 and 4 and 16 driverless trains for line 9, and in April 2009 it added 6 more driverless trains. 24 trains entered service on Line 2 from 28 September 2006. The trains are capable of speeds of up to 80 km/h, and in Barcelona each consists of five walk-through cars with longitudinal seating, aluminium car bodies and closed-circuit television. The series also operates in Latin America on the Santo Domingo, Panama and Lima metros and, with 18 three-car trains, on Line 3 of the electric urban train system in Jalisco.
