Alstom Metropolis AS-2002

Passenger Rolling Stock and High-Speed Trainsets

The Alstom Metropolis AS-2002, whose name stands for Acero Santiago 2002, is the fourth model of train on the Santiago Metro in Chile. It was designed and built by Alstom in Brazil and was the system's first modular train running on steel wheels. Alstom won the contract in a tender against Siemens for 201.9 million US dollars. There are 72 three-car trains of motor, trailer and motor cars, built from 2004 to 2010, and after the 2019 protests burned or damaged several of them 69 remain in service on Lines 4 and 4A. They take 750 volts direct current from a third rail and use alternating current traction motors, two per bogie. A modernisation announced in 2022 is meant to keep them running for about thirty more years.
