The Alstom Metropolis is a family of electric multiple units designed and built by the French rolling stock manufacturer Alstom for high capacity rapid transit and metro systems. Trains can run from two to ten cars and can operate with or without staff on board, and the car body can be aluminium or stainless steel, on steel wheels or rubber tyres, in small, medium or wide widths. Traction uses the ONIX or OPTONIX variable voltage inverter drive feeding asynchronous three-phase AC traction motors, with regenerative braking. More than 4,000 Metropolis cars have been built for around 50 operators in cities including Singapore, Shanghai, Budapest, Warsaw, Montreal, Sydney, Amsterdam and Paris.
