British Rail Class 390

Passenger Rolling Stock and High-Speed Trainsets

The British Rail Class 390 Pendolino is an electric tilting high-speed multiple unit built by Alstom with Fiat Ferroviaria's Pendolino technology and run by Avanti West Coast on the West Coast Main Line. Fifty-three eight-car units were built between 2001 and 2005, the last to be assembled at Alstom's Washwood Heath plant before it closed, and they were later lengthened to nine cars and in some cases to eleven, with four more eleven-car trains built in Italy. Virgin Rail Group ordered them to replace locomotive-hauled stock. The design speed is 140 mph, but signalling limits service to 125 mph. Alstom's Onix drive controls 12 traction motors on each unit, and a refurbishment of the fleet began in 2021.
