The EuroSprinter is a family of electric locomotives, a modular concept for the European market built by Siemens Mobility. The Siemens product name is ES 64, with ES standing for EuroSprinter and 64 for the 6,400 kW power at rail, and a further letter gives the use, U for universal, P for prototype and F for freight, with a number for how many electric power systems the locomotive supports. The first prototype, the ES 64 P, was built in 1992 in the hope of a large Deutsche Bahn order and was tested in Norway, Spain, Portugal and Germany. Standard types include the ES 64 F freight locomotive, supplied to Deutsche Bahn as Class 152, the four-system ES 64 F4 as Class 189, and the universal ES 64 U known as Taurus, one of which reached 357 km/h in trials near Nuremberg in 2006. Variants also run in Belgium and South Korea.
