Indian locomotive class WAGC3/WAG-10

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The WAGC-3, also known as WAG-10, is a class of 25 kV AC electric locomotive rebuilt by Banaras Locomotive Works from a WDG-3A diesel locomotive, able to deliver 10,000 horsepower. The name stands for broad gauge, alternating current, goods service and converted. In 2018 Chittaranjan Locomotive Works, Banaras Locomotive Works and the Research Design and Standards Organisation converted one WDG-3A into a purely electric twin-section locomotive, following an initiative of the Railway Board in November 2017 to work out the conversion of diesel locomotives to electric ones. The conversion kept the motorized truck assembly with its traction motors and converters, and the computer controlled brakes, while the underframe and superstructure were redesigned. It took only 69 days, and the unit is in service at Bondamunda shed of South Eastern Railway.
