Alstom Prima

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

Prima is Alstom's family of diesel and electric locomotives, developed as a modular platform that could meet the needs of many railways and European interoperability standards. The first generation grew out of a French national railway order placed in 1998 for 120 electric locomotives, later raised to 240, and an Alstom demonstrator was built in 2002. The second generation, Prima II, was launched in 2009, and a diesel and battery hybrid shunter, the Prima H3, was launched in 2013 and entered service with Deutsche Bahn and several industrial users. By 2008 Alstom had reportedly sold 1,750 Prima locomotives, with customers in France, China, Morocco, India, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Israel. Alstom Traxx replaced the Prima in the summer of 2023.
