Class M10 is a mainline diesel-electric locomotive built by Banaras Locomotive Works in India for Sri Lanka Railways and constructed in 2012. It looks much like the Indian WDM-3D but its specifications differ, and it is one of the longest locomotive types in Sri Lanka. The first three, numbered 914, 915 and 916, were bought for the Northern Railway reconstruction project and were used mainly on freight and oil trains, and later on ballast trains during the rebuilding of the lines to Talaimannar and Kankesanthurai. Six more locomotives imported in 2012 form the M10A, a technical variant numbered from 940 onward. On 20 September 2013 an M10A was sent on trial to Kandy, the first time the type ran on the up-country line, and once the northern line reached Jaffna the M10s also hauled passenger services such as the Yal Devi.
