Indian locomotive class WDG-3A

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The Indian locomotive class WDG-3A is a freight diesel-electric locomotive developed in 1994 by Banaras Locomotive Works at Varanasi for Indian Railways. Its name stands for broad gauge, diesel and goods traffic, with 3A marking its 3,100 horsepower rating. It entered service on 18 July 1995 and is the dedicated freight version of the WDM-2, sharing its engine and horsepower with the WDM-3A while offering higher tractive effort and a heavier axle load. A total of 1,164 units were built between 1994 and 2015, mostly at Banaras Locomotive Works, with a few from the Diesel Loco Modernisation Works and the Parel Workshop. Production ended in 2015 as the more capable WDG-4 arrived, and the article records that two WDG-4 locomotives can haul more goods than three WDG-3A. Some units were later rebuilt as electric twin-section locomotives classed WAGC-3 or WAG-10.
