D13E

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The D13E is a diesel locomotive model used on the Vietnam Railways network, built by the Diesel Locomotive Works at Varanasi in India, which is now Banaras Locomotive Works. Twenty-five were built in three batches: numbers 701 to 708 in 1983 and 1984, numbers 709 to 715 in 1984 and 1985, and numbers 716 to 725 in 2001 and 2002. They run on the one-metre gauge, with a Co-Co wheel arrangement, an ALCO 251D-6 six-cylinder four-stroke inline engine rated at 1,350 horsepower, DC-DC transmission and a top speed of 100 kilometres per hour. Two liveries are in use: red and white on the earlier batches, popular in the south, and blue and white on the 2001 batch, popular in the north of Vietnam.
