Bangladesh Railway Class 2800

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

Bangladesh Railway Class 2800 is a class of metre-gauge diesel-electric locomotives operated by Bangladesh Railway, ten of which were built by Banaras Locomotive Works at Varanasi, India. They joined the Bangladesh fleet in 1996 and are used only on passenger trains, from local and commuter services to mail and express workings; they once also ran intercity trains such as the Jamuna Express. The class is derived from the Indian YDM-4, which ALCO introduced in 1961 and Banaras Locomotive Works built from 1968, and in 1996 ten YDM-4 locomotives were converted from hood units to a dual-cab arrangement without changing their length and exported as the 2800 series, designated YDM-4BR by Bangladesh Railway. Each has a Co-Co wheel arrangement and a 1,400 horsepower six-cylinder ALCO 251B-6 engine, with the model designation DL535A/RSD-30, and the class name MED-14 and numbers 2801 to 2810. The dual-cab change later caused serious cooling problems, and as of 2020 only five of the ten were still active.
