Renault JJ

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The Renault JJ was a standard-gauge shunting locomotive designed by Renault in 1922, the first standard-gauge rail vehicle the firm produced. Several dozen were built into the 1930s. It started with a 40 horsepower engine, but most received a 90 horsepower petrol engine, and the last JJ built had a 110 horsepower diesel. One with a 60 horsepower engine worked on the Nord network from 1923 and was renumbered LZZ 15 by the SNCF in 1937 and YR 07001 in 1948, after being refitted with a diesel; two were delivered in 1924 to the Franco-Spanish company of the Tangier to Fez railway. Very sturdy, JJ locomotives stayed in service on private sidings into the 1970s.
