EMD Class 66

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The Electro-Motive Diesel Class 66, also called the EMD JT42CWR, is a family of Co-Co diesel locomotives built by EMD for the European heavy freight market. It was designed for use in Great Britain as the British Rail Class 66, a development of the Class 59, and has been adapted and certified for use in other European countries; outside Europe, 40 were sold to Egyptian Railways for passenger operation. In the United Kingdom 250 were sold to English Welsh and Scottish, with further orders from Direct Rail Services, Fastline, Freightliner and GB Railfreight. The first mainland European order came from the German company HGK for two locomotives, followed by TGOJ Trafik in Sweden. A modified version for Euro Cargo Rail in France, designated JT42CWRM-100 and classed 77, has a 12-cylinder 710 engine meeting EU Stage IIIA rules and DC traction motors rated at 3,300 horsepower, with over 100 bought. The locomotive uses an EMD 710 prime mover, D43 traction motors and patented radial bogies. A planned Class 66EU was cancelled in 2011.
