British Rail Class 67

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The British Rail Class 67 is a class of Bo-Bo diesel-electric locomotives that Alstom built between 1999 and 2000 at its Meinfesa plant in Valencia, Spain, for the English Welsh and Scottish Railway. Thirty locomotives were ordered through the leasing company Angel Trains in a contract worth 45 million pounds that was split between Alstom and Electro Motive Diesel, as replacements for Class 47 locomotives on high-speed Royal Mail trains and passenger services. The monocoque bodyshell and the H-frame bogies are Alstom designs, while the engine, traction motors and control electronics are General Motors EMD products shared with the Class 66. High-speed running tests at Alstom's La Sagra facility reached 230 kilometres per hour, and all thirty units were in the United Kingdom by early 2000. Axle load problems first held the class to 110 miles per hour until the bogies were modified. After the Royal Mail contract ended the locomotives went on to Caledonian Sleeper, Royal Train, Chiltern Railways and Transport for Wales Rail work.
