The EMD SDP40F is a six-axle cowl unit diesel-electric locomotive of 3,000 horsepower built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division from 1973 to 1974. Based on the Santa Fe's FP45, EMD built 150 for Amtrak, and it was the first diesel locomotive built new for Amtrak. A series of derailments in the mid-1970s shattered Amtrak's confidence and many railroads banned it from their tracks. In 1977 Amtrak chose to retire it in favor of the EMD F40PH, trading most of its fleet to EMD for components used in new F40PH units. The rest went to the Santa Fe as SDF40-2 freight locomotives, and ex-Amtrak No. 644 is preserved.
