The EMD SDP40 is a six-axle passenger diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division between June 1966 and May 1970. Like its predecessor the SDP35, it was a high-horsepower freight locomotive with equipment for passenger train service, and EMD published common operator and service manuals for it and the SD40 because they were so similar. To fit a steam generator, designers moved the machinery about 2 feet forward on the frame, added a compartment behind the radiators for the boiler and divided the fuel tank into fuel and water sections. All were powered by EMD's new 645E-series engine.
