EMD E9

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The EMD E9 is a 2,400 horsepower A1A-A1A diesel locomotive for passenger trains built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division at La Grange, Illinois between April 1954 and January 1964. One hundred cab-equipped A units and 44 cabless booster B units were produced, all for service in the United States. It was the tenth and last model of the EMD E-unit and differed from the E8 only in its newer engines and a flusher headlight glass mounting. Twin 12-cylinder 567C engines each drove a generator, powering four traction motors. It hauled American passenger and mail trains from the 1950s into the late 1970s.
