EMC E1

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The EMC E1 was an early streamlined passenger diesel locomotive of 1,800 horsepower with an A1A-A1A wheel arrangement, built by the Electro-Motive Corporation of La Grange, Illinois, in 1937 and 1938 for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. Eight cab-equipped A units and three cabless B units were built, each with two 900 horsepower Winton 201-A engines. The first units hauled the Super Chief, and the second pair were the first locomotives to wear the Santa Fe red and silver Warbonnet colors. The E1 was the second model of the long E-unit line. The surviving units were rebuilt as E8M locomotives in 1952 and 1953, and none was preserved.
