EMC 1800 hp B-B

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The EMC 1800 hp B-B was a group of five experimental diesel passenger locomotives built in 1935 by the Electro-Motive Corporation: two company demonstrators numbered 511 and 512, Baltimore and Ohio Railroad number 50, and a two-unit set for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, number 1. Electro-Motive was then still a design and marketing firm, so the boxcab bodies were subcontracted to General Electric at Erie and the St. Louis Car Company. Each power unit carried two 900 horsepower Winton 201-A twelve-cylinder engines on B-B trucks, a layout that exceeded what one engine could deliver at the time and that, together with the multiple-unit controls, was adopted for the E-units two years later. The Santa Fe pair, nicknamed the One Spot Twins, hauled the first Super Chief. The demonstrators were scrapped in 1938, while B&O number 50 survives at the National Museum of Transportation in St. Louis.
