New York Central Niagara

Steam and Early Locomotives

The New York Central Niagara was a family of 27 steam locomotives of the 4-8-4 wheel arrangement, all built by the American Locomotive Company for the New York Central Railroad in 1945 and 1946. They came in three classes: the single S-1a, No. 6000, the S-1b locomotives numbered 6001 to 6025, and the S-2a, No. 5500, nicknamed the Super Niagara, which used Franklin poppet valves where the others had Baker valve gear. Designed under the railroad's motive power chief Paul Kiefer to sustain about 6,000 horsepower on the New York to Chicago main line, they had 79 inch driving wheels, roller bearings throughout and no steam dome, to fit the railroad's low clearances. Six of them took part in the 1946 steam versus diesel road trials. The whole class was retired and scrapped by mid 1956, and none was preserved.
