The GE Dash 8-40BW, or B40-8W, is a four-axle diesel locomotive that GE Transportation built for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway between 1990 and 1992 as part of the Dash 8 Series of freight locomotives. The designation reads as B for two axles per truck, 40 for 4,000 horsepower, 8 for the late-1980s design generation and W for the wide cab. Santa Fe was the only railroad to order it, and a cabless booster version was considered but dropped because a cabless unit cost the same. All passed to BNSF and some were later sold on. Built for high-speed intermodal service, they were moved to local work by the mid-2000s, and number 537 is preserved in Silvis, Illinois.
