The GE B39-8, officially the Dash 8-39B, is a four-axle diesel-electric locomotive of 3,900 horsepower built by GE Transportation Systems as part of the Dash 8 Series of freight locomotives. A total of 145 examples were manufactured from 1984, and its external appearance is almost the same as that of the later Dash 8-40B apart from the trucks. The first three were built for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, after which GE made mechanical and electrical improvements and redesigned the carbody for the remainder of production; those later units are sometimes called B39-8E. Another 102 were built for Locomotive Management Services and leased long term to Burlington Northern, and 40 for the Southern Pacific.
