The GE AC4400CW, sometimes called the AC44CW, is a 4,400 horsepower diesel-electric locomotive that GE Transportation Systems built between 1993 and 2004. It resembles the Dash 9-44CW but uses AC traction motors with a separate inverter for each motor. In an 11-year production run 3,018 were built for North American railroads, plus 577 AC44i units for Brazil, and by 2005 every Class I freight railroad except Norfolk Southern and Canadian National owned at least one. It was the first GE locomotive to offer self-steering trucks. Tighter emissions rules from January 2005 ended its sale in favor of the ES44AC, and a 6,000 horsepower version was offered as the AC6000CW.
